Africa. Zambia's countryside, 1979-1982. Aid worker Marianne and her partner Joep find their way to the country's Western Province. They are young, driven, enthusiastic, and have a great interest in other cultures. Thanks to their friendships with Zambians, they gain access to one cultural event after another. They witness initiations, incantations, and ritual festivities. A 10-day stay in a remote village deep in the bush is one of the highlights. With panache, Marianne describes the exceptional situations in her own daily life, the village life, the school as experienced by a thousand students, exciting adventures, and the birth of their son under extreme circumstances. The way the author reflects on her experiences is authentic and compelling. She tells her captivating story with emotion, depth, and a sense of humor. This is an account straight from the heart. Exactly what touched her so about the local populace: Zambia's society as a warm beating heart. A fascinating book, rich of Zambian heritage.
